About Our Chapter
Established in June, 2014, Shanghai+Acumen was founded by a group of business professionals looking to give back to society in a meaningful manner. The Chapter aims to bring together individuals with a passion to make changes in the world and provide a platform to raise awareness, collaborate and design solutions to tackle poverty in a sustainable way.
Meet the team
With a background in biological, business, social and economic Anthropology she lives and breathes understanding the human race and its cause and effect. Charlie is incredibly passionate and dedicated to contributing to the work Acumen are doing on a global stage and hopes to make a marked difference in China’s approach to tackling poverty.
Dan has always had a passion for healthcare and how enterprise and innovation in healthcare can lead to better and happier lives. He currently leads the China practice of a global consulting firm that works with healthcare companies (pharma, biotech, devices and diagnostics) to establish and build brands and products to meet the needs of the Chinese patient population. Dan has lived and worked across 5 continents, and seen the disparate needs in healthcare delivery between wealthy and developing nations.
The work that Acumen does in emerging economies with companies that aim to tackle poverty related issues, not just in healthcare, inspired him to become part of Shanghai+Acumen. Dan’s background in marketing, business management and strategy will be useful tools in helping establish this +Acumen chapter into a long lasting Shanghai community institution.
Communications & Course Ambassador
Armed with a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics, in 2008, Wendy set aside Corporate America on a journey to experience a different life – a life without running water, but the Internet. Through her role as a Small Enterprise Developer with the U.S. Peace Corps, Wendy worked with microfinance institutions and entrepreneurs amidst the rolling hills of Western Cameroon. In addition, Wendy founded the Books for Cameroon project, and raised over $10k USD via social media to collaborate with local communities; the project established 35 libraries across Cameroon. Her greatest lesson from her experience: outside solutions will never be sustainable without a deep understanding of cultural context and local ownership.
Since, Wendy has continued her mission to develop sustainable solutions to affect change at the cross-section of private sector practices, public sector missions, and the power of social media. Her interest for the Acumen community began from reading, “The Blue Sweater”, and she is excited to be a part of this team that will engage with the community at large in Shanghai.
Alvaro has developed his career in the renewable energy and automotive sectors. He is currently managing the growth in China for a world leading supplier of auto parts. Thanks to his job, he has had the chance to witness and interact with the many realities of China.
Since his teenage years, he has been a key part of developing projects for socially excluded people in his community, ranging from severe alcoholism, refugees to homeless people. Alvaro hopes to bring his experiences, expertise and network from the private sector, to make Shanghai+Acumen the driving force of the new charitable China.
